I\\\'ve been with 1and1.co.uk for about 2 weeks - purchasing a dedicated server which was a massive jump up for me and I couldn;t really afford it. My site has had regular down-time for upto 4/5 hours at a time - support is terrible, waiting 24 hours for a response when my server is down is just not on. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE

I had to use their automated cancelation route because they would not do it during the phone call. Now I see why they are waiting for you to make a mistake on the frustrating form so they can continue to charge you for something you did not fill out correctly.I am be charge for a extra month for not checking the proper box.I would NOT RECOMMEND THIS SERVICE TO ANYONE. Recently switched to Virtual Private server package after 3 years on MS business Pro (1and1.co.uk.) I Was beginning to experience a slowing down and occasional outages on shared hosting - probably due to overstuffing the servers So far so good. In the first few days of tinkering, I screwed my own server. The re-image took less than 4 hours after I initiated the re-image via the control panel (no tech support required) I guess the bottom line is - if you know what you are doing use 1and1 and hey! you can always keep your credit card info up to date via the control panel. If you need a lot of hand holding and/or are the forgetful type - try someone else Tech Support - probably 6/10 but I can't remember the last time I had to use them

I have been using 1and1.co.uk for nearly 12 months. I have only experienced a few problems with my email when they upgraded the email server. No downtime on my websites. I have found their support and sales teams to be helpful and responsive; any email queries have been answered in 24 hours. My only annoyance is that the FTP timeout is rather quick. For all those who wish to cancel products easily just login to the contracts website at https://contract.1and1.co.uk/.

The UK side of this business is a nightmare to deal with. The support is terrible, being based in the Far East. It takes days for the domains to be up and running, and expect hidden fees on renewal and if you try to cancel your contract. Beware of this last point.

They suck big time. Their email is the lousiest!! Spam filter is a joke. Support is farce. They have a set of monkeys sittingin Philippines who just know how to say 2 things - Sorry and our admin is looking - you are better off breaking your head agains a stone. And even to do that you wait MINIMUM 30 minutes. Technical problems happen, but what makes difference is response and fixing them to a clients satisfaction. In this - 1and1.com are the worst....I mean the worst possible one can be. I am a web developer - referred them so many clients - but no consideration. I deal with other hosting companies - they have decency to call back and inform or resolve issues - with 1and1 - forget it!! Sites go down for 24 - 48 hours - Nothing is done. They DO NOT CARE!! RUN AWAY FROM THEM - WHILE YOU CAN!!

They just shut my server off about an hour ago (today is sunday) and told me that it\\\'s a billing issue and that billing won\\\'t be in till tomorrow, and that they can\\\'t do anything because they don\\\'t have access. Now i have to wait till morning to find out what\\\'s going on... If you are already a customer with 1and1 you might want to take the time and think if they mess up with your account are you willing to bite the bullet and have your server offline until someone from billing arrives in during regular brick and morter working hours? Reviewer: Chris L, Edinburgh   2006-02-14
I really am rather surprised by some of the comments. I have been with 1and1 across 3 different packages for 2 years. I monitor all my own sites using Alchemy Eye 24/7. I have average response times (I can live with that), good uptime (in fact it has not gone down in a very long time at all), ssh access and decent domain management, a real necessity for me. I have had to email support several times to ask about upgrades and server package config and always received a decent reply within 24 hours. On the occassion I called (once) I was answered within a minute or so and got a very knowledgeable lady able to answer my question, and no language difficulties. In spite of my thick Scottish accent! So given my experience, I really am quite surprised by the number of people who have had a bad time.

I am quite happy! Though I have not used (and hopefully will not need) any tech support. I thought I would break with that tradition as my experience has been positive. Super domain prices and site add-ons.

This is the WORST hosting company ever. I never saw, so low level of competence, lack of expertise, and general disinterest to help. BE AWARE! Not only they automatically renew your domain name without any notice, but also if you want to cancel a domain you have to sign a form and send it by fax or mail (not email). Their control panel is the poorest I'd never seen.

 HORRIFIC HOST
Reviewer: Mike Davis   2006-02-03
Support is the worst, rude and untrained. They have no idea what they are doing. They completely lost one of my websites when I used their web builder or web creator. They also started messing with my dns settings when I tried to dns elsewhere. Also they tried to tweak my sites for the worst causing me all kinds of extra work and money.I should have known by their good prices that this was to good to be true.Trust me, its better to pay and get good service than to go the cheap way.Stay clear of this one. If your looking for a good host that has online chat support 24 hours a day;Try hostgator.com.You'll be happy with their service.Only downfall is their domain prices. This host is well worth the extra 5 dollars just because of their speed and service.

 Billing is terrible
Reviewer: Yusif Gasimov   2006-02-03
I have purchased five domain names from 1and1.com in July 2004. Service was great and price was nice. However, company increased its price, therefore I emailed them prior to the renewal of my service and requested for service to be cancelled. company gave me runaround and tried to retain my service and by the time they advised me how to cancel service, domains were auto renewed. They charged my credit card for full amount and I had to dispute it. Then they contacted me to advise that my account would go to collection if I do not pay for service. I have cancelled the service with them, but they expect payment. I agreed to make payment today, however, they refused to turn services back on. They expect me to pay $24 while they retain domains with my name on whois, but no forwarding or email support for them. I have complained to FTC and about to forward my complaint to Attorney General Of State of Pensylvania where company resides (metro Philly). To be completely honest, when service was on, never had any problem with company. It looks like when one tries to leave company as client, then you start dealing with billing and customer service issues.

 Worst experince
Reviewer: Kay Lani   2006-02-03
This company amazes me that it still in business given the unacceptably low level of quality. I really have nothing positive to say about them besides providing the very basic service that any web hosting company would provide. They have the following problems: I tried the windows plan. There are a lot of technical glitches. For example, I could not use FTP until I called and had the technical support turn off Front Page Extensions. It took them 3 days. Before that, I tried to do this myself from the Control Panel, and I got the message that its in process and would take 30 minutes. Few days later I gave up and called the tech support. Any change you make from the control panel has to take 30 minutes to take effect. First time I had to deal with such system. Customer service and technical support are simply horrible. The wait time on the phone can go up to 30-40 minutes. The line often disconnect after waiting 30-40 minutes. The person answering the phone (from a call center) has no technical knowledge and has almost always forward your issue to the ‘Engineers’, who reply after 2-3 days. In many cases the reply would “it cannot be fixes” or “the problem is at your end”. When you get to speak to one of the persons on the call center, they speak fast, want get rid of you as soon as possible, and through the problem on you. The web mail client is very primitive. There are no folders. If you delete a message, it gone forever. No ‘deleted’ folder. No ‘sent’ folder. You have to login to https://webmail.1and1.com/ to check email and not something like mail.yourdomain.com like many other hosting companies. Many more problems..

 1and1=3
Reviewer: Doug Solether   2006-02-03
Like anything else, its the luck of the draw. I have 8 plans and hundreds of domains with 1and1. The 8 plans are on 3 or 4 different servers. With one of the servers I have had nothing but problems, while with the others I have had great success. Same with customer service, good at times and bad at times, it just depends on the person working with you. I will say this, forget about using their email. It is absolutely without question terrible. Slow, doesn't work properly, not user-friendly...I could go on and on. With the good comes the bad...1and1 is middle of the road, a little good and a little bad.

 Nigel Hill sums it up...
Reviewer: Kate Morton   2006-02-03
I have to completely agree with Nigel Hill's comments. As a British expat I used 1and1 for domain names for future website when my husband and I set up our jungle lodge in Belize. I too have had problems with the automatic renewal of domain names - 2 years running - and suspension of all services, rather than those for which I refuse to pay. They are a process-led company with complete disregard for personal customer service, and seem to use a call-centre system of anyone dealing with your query who happens to pick it up. I've had emails from 4 different technical "support" team members - all of whom have spectacularly failed to resolve the problem. Easy way out... 1and1's service, to put it bluntly, absolutely stinks. The stress isn't worth their apparently cheap prices. Cheap being the operative word, as opposed to good value.

 The UK 1and1 are excellent
Reviewer: Markuz   2006-02-03
It's very strange to read so many negative or non-commital reviews on 1and1 and I can only assume that the US hosts are very different from the UK hosts. I have been a professional web designer for over 7 years now and have tried so many hosts you wouldn't believe. After a month or so I can always tell if I'm going to continue using a host, and I invariably move on to someone else. Having watched Clara go from a pretty decent business host to being downright terrible over the last few years (they were the only host I'd recommend at one point, before they allowed their servers to become congested and their customer support to disappear to nothing!) I went on the hunt for a new host. I tried 4 within one week, installing a perl shopping cart with MySQL databases to see how they would all perform on the various hosts. 1and1 came out on top, and I actually had NO complaints whatsoever. The speed was the best I had seen in a long time, their DNS controls were excellent (managed to transfer a domain from Clara to 1and1 through the control panel within 3 days with no problems) and even their Control Panel was well laid out. Normally I avoid anything that is web based and would stick to SSH / Telnet and FTP for everything but I found myself warming to their control panel. Customer service has been great although I've not really had to use it if I'm honest. Now comes with phpMyAdmin built in for the MySQL administration so that's an added bonus. I recommend 1and1.co.uk to anyone, but can't speak for the 1and1.com service I'm afraid!

 Illegal Business Practices
Reviewer: Nigel Hill   2006-02-03
Avoid this company. 1and1 have very bad practice. Their service is good, reliable, and it works most of all, but their business practice is disgusting. There are two main points that outline the problems that 1and1 create. Firstly, hidden away in the ts&cs is a clause whereby your domain names will be renewed without forewarning or authorisation to charge your account. Secondly let's say you have paid for hosting in full and in advance. Should you have a completely seperate domain renewed, or some other charge applied, and suffer an unexpected outlay, 1and1 will suspend a service that you have already paid for in full. Ther terms carry a condition that they will take unpaid debts to a debt collection agency, so they will inevitably get back their money. They have no reason to fail to provide a service for which you have paid. It's called intimidating customers. They will cut off an account without bothering to contact you first. The Office Of Fair Trading told me that their business practice on this count is illegal. It is not, at this present time, in their terms and conditions that they may do this. If it was in their ts&cs it would be considered "Unfair Terms And Conditions". A final point, worth noting, is that it's easy to buy products from them, but to terminate an agreement, or cancel anything you first have to search their FAQ, type in a URL which is printed as an image file so you can't just click on it to visit a completely different part of their website where you have to fill out a form electronically AND fax it to them within 7 days. Avoid this company.

I signed up for 1and1's Linux Developer Account because it was cheap. After a year, I still with 1and1. Pros: Sites have been up for over a year without noticeable downtime. Price. Features in control panel are extensive. Once again- PRICE. Cons: Customer service is getting worse. AOL blocks emails from the 1and1 mail servers- when asked why- I was told by 1and1 techs that they are working on it. When asked when it would be fixed, they would not even give me a guess.

 THEY SUCK
Reviewer: Lisa Hildreth   2006-02-03
My website was done the majority of the time. They purport that it is a "EXPLORER" issue and sent me to microsoft for a "patch" which did not work. Then, they say, use a different browser. Did that, Firefox... DIDN'T WORK. Their email stinks too. Takes forever to load and the instructions on how to utilize a lot of the software they offer are at best minimal. DON'T USE THIS SERVICE. IT'S AWFUL.

 1&1 Review
Reviewer: Peter Sobkowski   2006-02-03
A friend of mine had gotten a free trial a year or two ago from the American 1&1 and persuaded me to sign up, for the first two months I had no problems other than pages that were on the server being unavailable at random times. On my third month with them, about a week in my account was suspended and I was told I had used too much bandwidth, I didn’t really believe it but said oh well. I emailed them and was told to contact another department, and then I was once again redirected to another department and then told that I have to buy some more bandwidth. I waited until the next month and the account was still suspended I emailed them again and they told me that the account will not be activated until I buy some more bandwidth. I emailed them one last time and asked if I could get my files off of the server and they told me no. Customer service was unfriendly not very well organized but the control panel was pretty nice.

 1 and 1 Equals...
Reviewer: Justin Sampson   2006-02-03
An existing client of mine was using 1and1 on suggestion of a freind. I heard bad things about them in the past and wanted to move them to another host that I was more experienced with but they wouldn't budge. 1and1 probably has the most comprehensive control panel I have ever seen. It's so big that it can actually take a while to find what you're looking for though. Support takes a while via email, up to 48 hours. Not too surprising for a company this big.

 1and1 Hosting
Reviewer: Kyle Peatt   2006-02-03
I first signed on with 1and1 when they were doing their free promotional offer for 5 years of free hosting on their cheapest package (5gigs transfer, 500 megs space, and all the benefits). They were offering it because they had just gone international - being just a UK company before. I was so amazed at their support offered for the free service and the duration of it. Unfortunately the promotion is over now but I continue to host most of my sites with them due to their prompt service and excellent uptime. Another thing I have noticed is the price of their domains - If you purchase through them (no need to host through them as well) it's only $5.99 for a top-level domain - which is easily one of the best prices I've ever seen. So all in all - 1and1 = 10. (in binary) Do you work for 1and1 Hosting? Respond to this review here.

 1and1 internet are rubbish!
Reviewer: S Jones   2006-01-29
1and1 internet are rubbish! They are utterly inflexable and the customer service is shocking. They use VOIP which often makes the operators hard to understand, but this isn't helped by their sketchy command of the English language. They may be dirt cheap. But the reason is that they pay their staff dirt and they provide you the customer with a cheap shoddy service that will leave you feeling frustrated and unsatisfied. If you feel this review was harsh check out simonjones.info/1and1internet and listen to several calls made to them yourself.

This is probably the worst web hosting company in the UK.
Reviewer: rt   2006-01-29
This is probably the worst web hosting company in the UK. I maintain work and personal sites but was never able to make a site on this company's servers active. Their help desk was no help at all and simply referred back to the instructions that hadn't worked before. Eventually I gave up and abandoned the attempt. More than a year later 1&1 are sueing me. Apparently, their terms and conditions don't oblige them to actually provide a service. If you can't use their service you still have to pay. They are rude and officious and I regret ever getting involved with these cowboys.

 99% uptime?"
Reviewer: Stuart King   2006-01-29
BS. I have been hosting with 1and1.com for 9 months now and several months ago I noticed the my site was unavailable for short periods in the middle of the day. I became conserned and started monitoring my URL. The first month I monitored 1and1.com posted 97% uptime. What makes that figure even worse is that I am only polling my URL every 30 minutes. I sent many emails on the subject and the told me that I was wrong and that the problem must be on my end. I know this is not the case becuase I get complaints about my site being unavailable from people all over the world. What's more, I work for an online database provider...if we are down there is big trouble. Polling every 30 minutes 1and1.com posted an unimpressive 97.859% uptime with 75 recorded outages between August 11, 2005 and December 31, 2005. I wonder what these numbers would look like if I were polling every 5 minutes?

 Outsourcing at its best....
Reviewer: Matthew Lindahl   2006-01-29
I work for an IT company that thought this would be a great host for our Exchange email hosting and our customers. Hey, cheap pricing and you get money back for affiliation? What could be better? Well, I found out why. Their outsourcing (from what I've read, to the Philippines...) is incredible, and no, I don't mean that in a good way. I have called them 4 or 5 times now, and the least amount of time I have spent holding was 19 minutes. That is a waste of time. I have tried to get a hold of their billing department, and after a 54 minute wait, someone came on the line and said "Hel..." and I was hung up on. This is ridiculous. I have more important things to be doing than being on hold. Do not use this company if you're going to need support. Thanks.

 Don't ever need tech support
Reviewer: MJ   2006-01-29
I signed up with 1and1 during their 3 year promotion. I have not had any major problems with their service. Actually what they offer is very good. The main sticking point is tech support. If you like to e-mail tech support for every problem you experience don't go with them as your host. I register my domains with them and use hosting elsewhere on most of my sites. I e-mailed 1and1 asking about modrewrite and it's 4 days later with no response. They probably don't know what the hell that is, I wouldn't be surprised. I have NEVER gotten a response from 1and1 in under 30 hours. I don't know if they say they have 24 hour tech support anymore on the website but if they did, that would be an outright LIE. The last time I called them I got someone in india with a VERY thick accent. At least the guy did get my problem resolved. I can say that much.

Reviewer: Adam Eberlin   2006-01-29
I have had 1&1 for almost 2 years now, and I still have the developer preview package. I signed up for them during their introductory offer of 3 years of service for free. It's great. All I have to do is pay for my domains per year, and bandwidth that goes over my limit. I am also extremely pleased with customer service. Even though it is outsourced, I get the help I'm looking for 90% of the time. Their control panel is somewhat slow, but overall, it's extremely easy to use, and I've never had any significant problems with it. My sites have never been down, and the security is unsurpassable.

Reviewer: Beat Poltera   2006-01-29
Web hosting service is fine, just hope you never need to contact them. Technical support (outsourced to the Phillipines) is close to incompetent and trying to reach billing Dept. will put you into a hold of 30-60 minutes (no kidding, I have tested it several times). My cell phone charges were 4 times what I paid for the "service". If you want responsive and competent service, this hosting company is not for you!!! Be careful and consider yourself warned about this horrible lack of responsiveness...

 Terrible!
Reviewer: Shane Levine   2006-01-29
As stated in most of the reviews above, customer support is terrible. As I write this I've been listening to hold music for 35 minutes waiting for them to answer my call. I'm sure when (or if... I might still get cut off when it reaches 45 mins) they answer I will have to explain everything 5 times to the absolute useless cretin that picks up the phone. Very rarely you'll get someone who has an idea I've experienced multiple hardware and software failures with them. Their auto domain renewal is a joke. It took me three attempts for them to cancel domains as they kept loosing the faxes. I'm sure I'll have hell when it comes to cancelling the hosting contract too. Absolutely terrible service. Stay away from them at all costs.

I wait 5 days for email support, not 24hrs as adverised, if you phone up you get someone in USA how cant understand your accent. For an example my mail server performs when it wants, I recon on 70% uptime in last month. The databases display on web site to many connections to database server. Sadly 1and1 hosting is the worse hosting company I have worked with and not worth the money.

Reviewer: Eugene M.   2006-01-29
I signed up for their developer package ($20/month). Good features: IMAP email, many domains, many email accounts, free 5 domains, included SSL cert. Bad: Cannot use third party SSL cert. Only one SSL cert permitted. Unusable webmail client. Slow control panel. Incredibly slow MySQL database. I installed OScommerce and today the shop is barely working... I am switching to Godaddy VPS, I was assured it has IMAP, as soon as I find out I am moving everything to them. It feels like they overstuff their servers. Credit card billing methods are a bit unorthodox. Oh and customer service is a joke. This company seems to offer a good package and despite some negative reviews I signed up for their plan. I now urge you NOT to sign up, you will only waste a lot of time and some money.

As elsewhere, 1and1 will take your money online in 5 minutes, yet to cancel the demand a faxed or posted form. I emailed them a PDF as I didn't have a fax and they wouldn't print it out and use it as cancellation. Note that they do not have your signature or any proof of who you are when you sign up, so why do they demand a paper cancellation? To inconveninece you. Familiarise yourselves with the Distance Trading regulations UK users! Watch for the auto renewal clause - it's in the t's&c's. They prey on people who believe that all registrars are customer focused. Most other registrars will expire your domain nicely after the prepaid period - these guys not email you in advance of renewal, but will try and charge your card that's probably expired, then set BFS Finance after you! This company will probably leave you with a bad aftertaste and the feeling that you've been ripped off.

 1and1 are borderline criminals

After attempting to move a domain to a different web host(because I do not like like domain and website be with the same company) I did a domain Delete with them. Well they have 3 options for you when you delete it. Choose the wrong one and your domain goes into redemptive limbo and it will cost you $80 to recover a $9 domain name. I chose to cancel a domain and the verbage was that it would be canceled from their servers at the approptriate time, well they did not say how long (30 days ends up) then they tell you that it is your fault and that because you made the mistake is why it should cost $80. :) ends up I just created a new domain with godaddy and found a different webhost. PRoblem solved and they can choke on that domain that is sitting on their server in "limbo" now.

 Very Poor

Rating this company 1 out of 5 gives them too much credit... I made the unfortunate mistake of becoming a 1&1 customer. Until I became a customer, I had perfect credit, that is before my 1&1 credit card expired. The email address I gave changed during my subscription, so of course I did not receive the promised reminders. Rather than canceling my subscription due to the expired card, they automatically renewed it and sent my information to a collection agency within 2 weeks of the payment due date. No phone call, no snail letter, nothing… Immediately after receiving the letter from the collection agency, I called 1&1, paid the debt, and closed my account. Did they bother to tell the collection agency this? NO WAY! I recently preformed a credit check; the only tick on my account is from NCO FIN/99 which states that I’m “Seriously Overdue” for 3+ months. After waiting on hold for 30 minutes, the so called customer service agent promised to email me a note stating that my account is in good standing within 10 minutes of hanging up so that I can attempt to repair my credit. It’s been days, and still no note. Avoid them at all costs! They have no idea what customer service is or how to do it! They are an absolute nightmare to deal with!!!!!!

 Wow!
