Didn't like it at all Reviewer: Meixuan Bai 03-15-2006 There are many problems with GeoCities, which probably explains why their sales are down. I had a horrible experience with their CSR which then prompted me to quit my hosting there. Ridiculous that such a large company would have such poor service!

Biggest plus - it was free. Biggest complaint - the pop up ads!!! Reviewer: Heather 03-15-2006 This was the first web host I used. The customer support was non-existant. For free hosting, though you did get a decent amount to space and number of mailbox addys. The pop-up ads annoyed people to the point that I lost vistors - my guest log was full of complaints about them.

Rubbish support, but good uptime Reviewer: Heather 03-15-2006 I'm not sure where to start. I think i will start negative, and end on a plus point ...
I got some free hosting, for a small project i was doing. The trouble was, it had some background sound, which was approx 300-400kbs. After one hour of reloading, checking pages, updating etc, I HAD RUN OUT OF MY TRANSFER LIMIT.
I carried on with other stuff, but it happened again the next day. I gave up after a week, and found another host.
Their customer support is very poor, and can take upto three days I found to reply, often with a prewritten standard reply i found.
The server speeds are ok, but when yo uremember the pages are just plain html, they should be faster.
Price value = 10/10, because it is free!
Overall 5 - you wouldn't want a site with this company!

worst free host you'll ever have Reviewer: Syed 03-15-2006 geocities is the worst free host you'll ever have. Their uptime is constant, but the speed is slow as a turtle. Along with that pop-ups are the killer. You'll have popups on every page of your website.
My suggestion don't go to them.

Geocities is great Reviewer: Syed 03-15-2006 I found Geocities a great host to use in the past before I moved onto different hosters. They had 100% uptime and my site used to load fast. Infact I used them for many of my websites in the past. They are a good host to go with.

Too exspensive for so little content Reviewer: Dana Ezekiel 03-15-2006 I used this host in hopes to get a home business going but found that I was paying a lot of money for little content and I could not add graphics that way that I wanted to. I always had trouble with it and sometimes it would go down for no reason at all.
I am still looking a better host. I have stopped using geocities. I think my cousin might be able to assist me now. I just know i would not reccoment geocities because of the price.

Free Sites Which can be upgraded Reviewer: Patricia Gooding 03-15-2006 I have used this site for various projects and have found that they are quite supportive. The site is easy to use and is easily upgraded to paying sites for those projects where it is feasible. I have had very few problems and those I have encountered have been addressed quickly and appropriately by staff.

A lot of promises Reviewer: Holger Brodersen 03-15-2006 A lot of promises where given or implied. After the initial work was performed, the cat was left in the bag and not let out in the open. This was a bit of a let down and became depressed.

GeoCities use to be great, at present its just average. Reviewer: John Fitzgerald 03-15-2006 Not much to say negative about them, however not much to say positive, however the negative things, attempting to contact them for customer support issues was dificult, I think the problem is they started off great, built a good reputation then it fell apart. I can honestly say the downtime was minimal though and the speed seemed decent though, so again I would rate them as average and if you looking for just a average web host then geocities mite be for you.

Can't upload on other sites Reviewer: Katya 03-15-2006 I joined Geocities to host pictures and video files. I noticed you couldn't link the Geo files onto other sites without the link dying.
I think that after too many clicks, the site would show some sort of error.
I was a little dissapointed, had to change sites to upload my photos.

Not so fast. Low storage...but its free Reviewer: Dave Jake 03-15-2006 If you want a free web host and you don't care about quality, this is the host for you. it's pretty slow and theres low storage. The only plus side is the templates and simple tools to design.

Fair Host But not recommended. Reviewer: Joshua Symonds 03-15-2006 Geocities has made a name for itself as a web host for new people who wish to make websites.
Overall I wouldn't recommend Geocities as a web host, I feel you can definately find a better and more reliable host.
The server speed wasn't too flash, and some of the pricing could of been better aswell.
The support and uptime were good also, but from a whole package point of view Geocities doesnt match up to other hosts.

Reliable, but not worthwhile Reviewer: Isaac 03-15-2006 Geocities is another webhosting service for the new kids on the block. It has a nifty website builder, which can help you build a very basic, but functioning website. The interface of the whole thing is nicely laid out, and easy to navigate. Uploading files via the file manager is a snap, and accounts don't get deleted for inactivity.
However, if you want anything beyond a simple page written in HTML, you need to go somewhere else. Geocities does not offer you enough space to host anything large (15MB for storage I believe), and they don't support PHP, cgi-bin, FTP, or anything advanced like that.
If you're new, then give it a try. Otherwise, steer clear of it.

Slow Servers Reviewer: Robert 03-15-2006 Server Uptime- Server had never once had any downtime that i can recall.
Customer Support- Customer support was great they answered all my questions and/or concerns.
Server Speed- The servers are very slow loading servers even with very low end graphical websites.
Price Value- For the packages they offered, the price was not a good price at all. I have seen hosts that have offered much more space, traffic, and features/support than Geocities had.

Geocities offers several stuff like counters and everything. Reviewer: Jason 03-15-2006 Geocities offers several stuff like counters and everything. They have a very neat and easy-to-use PageBuilder that I used before I learned HTML. GeoCities is pretty easy to use. But you can never contact them, no matter what. On my site, there is a Line 2 Syntax Error. For browsers that have popup error messages, it drives them crazy. Their ads are fair because they are off to the side and you can customize them. Visitors can even close them!

After 2 years (with minimal graphics experience) Reviewer: Joan 03-15-2006 After 2 years (with minimal graphics experience), I have maintained what I considered an excellent presentation at GeocitiesFree. Since February, I can no longer launch java/pagebuilder. After all the troubleshooting, it's not ME ! Geocities just didn't bother to announce that Microsoft FrontPage 2002 is no longer available to GeoFree Customers. In short, there is no longer a free site. Thousands are disappointed at this poor business handling by a high visibility concern. Thanks for a chance to voice my opinion.

Have seen several write ups about the discontinuance of their free web space Reviewer: Betty 03-15-2006 Have seen several write ups about the discontinuance of their free web space - - - not true. They have changed their home page, but if one reads down the first column on the left, about mid-point there is a paragraph about signing up for a free web page. I did see some mention while surfing the area of a $10.00 set up, but didn't go any further as I already have a site and it's still up and running when I checked today. I also have full access to my file manager which another reviewer indicated they can't get at any longer. Would recommend this as the best free web hosting of any of them, despite the frame and single page ad.

signed up for a free website at geocities less than 1 year ago. Reviewer: Scary Pants 03-15-2006 signed up for a free website at geocities less than 1 year ago. (I opted for a free site because I didn't make any money from the site) I list celebrity fan clubs and collectors for free. I was a complete beginner when I started and worked very hard to get my site noticed by all the fans out there. What a shock 4 days ago to find out that Geocities deactivated my account without any reason at all. My site is still running but I cannot enter my site, update nothing. My mailbox was deleted as well. The fans know me as someone who answers their mail in a very short time. I live in South Africa and faxed Yahoo a query as well as snailmail and e-mail them. Untill now, no response. I feel cheated and dissapointed. They could have warned me, many fans are now left in the dark. I am now looking into buying a domain and a reliable paid for website. I am afraid to trust another free space provider.

I've been using the free version of Geocities for two years now. Reviewer: Loooking 03-15-2006 I've been using the free version of Geocities for two years now. Since their re-organization of their web packages, the free version is getting to be a joke. Previously, they would send you an e-mail when your bandwidth was exceeding the limit. Now the site is just disabled with a message. It is so bad that when I try and edit my pages, I cannot even preview it, because of the bandwidth message. I never seemed to get the bandwidth message so much before. Nothing on my site has changed, I think Yahoo is forcing people to upgrade and doing it very unfairly.

I cannot find from your site Reviewer: Maz 03-15-2006 I cannot find from your site, the best File Manager. Geocities has the best file manager that I know of, but they don't have smtp mail except at the $20 level. A big mistake on their part.

I have used geocities fo a long time. Reviewer: Jeri Warner 03-15-2006 I have used geocities fo a long time. It used to be a good free server. Now they want you to pay so any traffic that you get they shut your web site down saying you reached your allotted amount of traffic. As this used to be a good site it no longer is. Unless you pay!

As a non-profit organisation Reviewer: Theo Ross 03-15-2006 As a non-profit organisation, it seemed a good idea to go for a free hosting server. To my surprise, the allotted bandwidth allows approximately one visitor to my site before closing it down for an hour.

www.geocities.com is a popular site for hosting personal homepage. Reviewer: arunroy 03-15-2006 www.geocities.com is a popular site for hosting personal homepage. It is popular because of the simplicity in making WebPages. One need not have any knowledge of html and it is absolutely free. Anyone can become a member and build a homepage by using easy to use tools. One need not become a member if already have a Yahoo! ID. One has to use the password when asked.
Once signed in, to begin building a web page, select one of the options from the homepage of Geocities. I will suggest to take a tour by clicking ‘take our tour’ on the homepage.

Well you want to put yourself on web and if you just want your name out there with pictues, favourite links and mailto link so anyone can send you email. Reviewer: mahesh2k 03-15-2006 Well you want to put yourself on web and if you just want your name out there with pictues, favourite links and mailto link so anyone can send you email. Then I think ’’Geocities’’ is the place to put your first flag. Well there are many free hosting services but geocities is still favourite of many because of it’s simplicity. we’ll discuss other Alternative Hosting Communities later.

Promoting your website Reviewer: ee00224 03-15-2006 Promoting your website
These days having a personal webpage is as common as an email address. It serves as a wonderful tool for creating your web-identity and can help others find you and contact you. You can make an online photo album and all your relatives, friends can view it. You can upload your resume and might get a job!!!! It also serves you as a free, effective medium to advertise your products and services, and, with plethora of web services like geocities.com, lycos.com, freewebs.com it

I've been with Geocities for over six months now Reviewer: insolentrudder 03-13-2006 I've been with Geocities for over six months now, and really didn't have a complaint until they "upgraded" their system three weeks ago. What a nightmare! The new and "improved" PageBuilder is awful; not only does it NOT allow you to correct previously stored documents, it doesn't work itself. I'm VERY disappointed...

I had problems transferring my domain name to Geocities. Reviewer: Dave 03-13-2006 I had problems transferring my domain name to Geocities. Unfortunately I have no idea what those problems weer since they just refunded my money with no explanation. So did my current registrar not release my name or did I not do something right? Who knows? No response from Geocities to any of my e-mails. (Not even acknowledgement that they got my e-mails and will respond later)

Nothing but problems right out of the gate. Reviewer: Korensek 03-13-2006 Nothing but problems right out of the gate. I have spent the last 2 days trying to setup some basic layouts of my new site & uploading files and am not happy so far.
My first problem was that my FTP wasn't uploading my 1500 gif files even though they're the same files I've used on a previous Yahoo site(not GeoCities). After spending a day digging through help files, I find out that my gif's naming system wasn't appropriate since they have spaces & parenthesis in them (even though these names worked fine on my previous Yahoo site). Granted, I can use 1-2 renaming utilities to rename the 1500 files, but it's still tedious & time consuming. But at least it's do-able if I spend a couple hours renaming.
So, after sorting out this headache, I go to my next step & am just dumbfounded at what I find out. I now try to upload a few screen savers which are .exe files, and once again, FTP won't upload. More reading tells me that .exe files are not allowed!!!??? HUH???? Unless I'm missing something very basic here, how can their advertised high-end business site be forbidden to have .EXE files??? If their policy is to forbid them, the least I could expect is to find a notice to this effect somewhere in their sales pitch. I did a fair amount of reading before applying for my domain & did't find a hint of this policy anywhere.
Don't bother trying to find a support phone number, it doesn't exist, or, if it does, they've done a damn good job of hiding it. My only recourse was to e-mail them with my concerns. Their e-mail reply was a form letter with 2 links to follow. The first link was to a page listing which files their hosting doesn't accept (exe & script). DUHH!! I already know that- that was the point of my email (did they read it?). The second link was to their "Disconnect Service" page. How's that for a response to my concerns??!! No explanation or apology for not disclosing their policy (before registration) of forbiding exe & script files. Mind you, this plan is the one they hawk as being THE choice for a high-end, professional site.
Oh, here's another good one. For 3 days I've tried to access their billing option page to add an option to my account. And every time I've tried for 3 days, I get an error message stating the system is "busy" & to try again in a few minutes. Of course, it's been "busy" for 3 days now. Apparently there's no way of changing my billing options, since they don't have a phone line either. Wait, it gets better. They have another link on their non-working billing options page which states: YOUR FEEDBACK HELPS US IMPROVE THE SERVICE FOR YOU AND OTHERS. TELL US WHAT YOU THINK. In case you can't guess what awaits when you click that link, it takes you to another page which says PAGE CAN NOT BE DISPLAYED.
Since Yahoo migrated to GeoCities, their hosting prices have increased, their service & support seem non-existant & they seem to have a scr*w you attitude. I'm out of here.

I have only used geocities for free hosting but I have had a number of problems uploading files. Reviewer: N/A 03-13-2006 I have only used geocities for free hosting but I have had a number of problems uploading files. File names change during upload and pages don't load correctly. This site may be ok for free hosting but I wouldn't recommend it for small businesses.

A long-time user of Geocities Reviewer: Tony Presley 03-13-2006 A long-time user of Geocities, I have always been pleased with their service and would have rated them 8-10. Then my site disappeared from Geocities without notice. After more than 5 days I have not been able to receive any response from them after numerous attempts! My site includes a cancer help page which is very popular with cancer patients and I have received many e-mails asking what happened to my page?! To me, this is an emergency but to them (Geocities), it is evidently no big deal! They really seem to have no customer service and it looks like I am going to have to find another host.

Geocities is only good if you want a cute personal site. Reviewer: n/a 03-13-2006 Geocities is only good if you want a cute personal site. If you want to use it for a business site beware. Constant problems. Email attachments can only be up to 1.5 meg. Say email support questions answered in 72 hrs. All you get in 72 hrs is a general email saying test the problem, it may have corrected itself. The problem never gets corrected. Space for web site small. Limited to 6 pages.

Upon upload, files will take the name of another. Reviewer: picturesofanimals 03-13-2006 Upon upload, files will take the name of another. Example:"tiger.jpg" could become "sealion.html". It happens on at least 30% of all uploads. Of course, you get no tech support. VERY frustrating. Not worth the benefits of what they offer. Geocities sucks. There's no other way to put it. It's fine if you're a 15 year old girl who has a couple poems and updates once every 5 months, but not a semi-serious webmaster would consider it. It's a lot more work than it should be because of their problems.

Quick rundown: The first week Reviewer: ww.gulow.net 03-13-2006 Quick rundown: The first week, images on my site will randomly either not load, or have a different image loaded in it's place. After the first week, half the images on my site WILL NOT load. Sending email to tech support only results in a reply that the problem has been fixed. DO NOT USE THIS SUCK ASS COMPANY.

For less $10 a month you get a pretty good package Reviewer: Kurt 03-13-2006 For less $10 a month you get a pretty good package, including a versatile and easy to use web page editor and file manager. There is an online help community that is pretty useful. Front end is clear and well organized.

It's my 5th year at GeoCities, Reviewer: n/a 03-13-2006 It's my 5th year at GeoCities, it's a good place for beginners. They provide a page builder for people new to HTML. But the cons about GeoCities in my experience is the advertisements.
I have a free account which understandly means each page contains annoying Google ads.
And the site gets suspended everyday for reaching the maximum allocated amount of transfer data allowed.
But it's free, and great for people with small personal pages.

This was also my first host. Reviewer: James Greenup 03-13-2006 This was also my first host. Before I had a big site and knew what ftp was, this was a pretty decent host. It gave me a decent amount of space and its page wizard helped teach me how to make a web page. Overall I think its a good host to go to if you know little about having a web site, need little space, or don't have any money.

Geocities was my first host but lacked the space and features I needed at the time Reviewer: Peter Sobkowski 03-13-2006 Geocities was my first host but lacked the space and features I needed at the time, the support for it was pretty good and the service was excellent I never had any problems with it and my first site I published is still on it today. My site was never down and the customer service was fast and helpful. An excelent, simple host.

Geocities is awesome. Reviewer: Maaiz Khan 03-13-2006 Geocities is awesome. I have a whole group of poeple that use geocities to publicize their lives or their businesses.Geocities is also great for beginners.you will love it.
people that have never made a site before will love geocities software. if you are not a beginner you can also use html format to build your site.

So-So Host. Reviewer: Chronotrigga 03-13-2006 When I first tried to put my site up, I tried all of the many free hosts, and geocities was one of them. My first site was a blog about me, and solely for my friends in 4th grade.
It was a lot better when it started out, because not many people used it, but now it seriously LAGS on most pages, and all the friggin ads are in the way unless you have Mozilla.
Crazy. In overall, if you want a good starting host, you got it right here.

Good Stuff Reviewer: Ross Carroll 03-13-2006 I enjoy my site and don't expect more than what I'm getting for the money I'm paying. I am content with geocities however i would like my own domain name.

GeoCities - Novice Webhost Reviewer: Parham Rashidi 03-13-2006 GeoCities is devoloped for the new website user. I would not recommend this to users who have previous experience with other hosts. This host will be a crap compared to any other hosts. I have never trialed out the price hostings, but from the free service I was able to determine that GeoCities is a reliable host that you know will stick around. Only issue I have with the company is it does not support any experienced web designers. Also there is a problem with pop-ups. They really make the hosting a horrible experience. Also this website provides new website owners web builder. Very good for people who do not know html, php and etc.
I recommend this to novice users.
I do not recommend to anyone who had previously had a website.

Good enough Reviewer: Kaylee 03-13-2006 It's a good enough free service that I would use again if I couldn't pay for my own domain. It got me through the years where I couldn't and still wanted a website of my own. The one problem I found annoying was that it was down quite a lot.

Easy to navigate Reviewer: Ally Barnabe 03-13-2006 GeoCities is extremely easy to use and navigate. It's free to start up and a lot of web tools are available for use. Customer support is amazing and the server loads up pretty quickly, but sometimes it takes awhile for downloads and uploads.

Fast service, as long as it lasts you Reviewer: Steven 03-13-2006 I had a Spider-Man site in the past and it was closed down within a month, without any warning. They said I was inflicting copyright material. Other people had Spider-Man sites but they did not allow me to have one. Their customer support could have done a better job and tell me what I was doing wrong. This was the first time I made a site and it allowed me to stay away from geocities.

In the short time I was a member of Geocities, There server was always up. Reviewer: Ryan Hannaford 03-13-2006 The short time I was a part of GeoCities I rarely had any issues, It was fairly good service. The only real issue I had dealt with the speed. It wasn't that bad though!
I give GeaCities 9/10 overall!
